Nestled in between the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Boathouse Row, the Azalea Garden is one of the most colorful and carefree places to spend a Spring or Summer day while visiting Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love.
A picturesque gateway to Fairmount Park’s famous Boathouse Row area on Kelly Drive, the Philadelphia Azalea Garden is a part of the Schuylkill Recreation Path that literally runs for miles through Philadelphia along the Schuylkill River.
The Azalea Garden was donated to Fairmount Park in 1952 and has been restored on several occasions with joint partnerships involving the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Fairmount Park Commission.
Located on the magnificent grounds of Philadelphia’s Museum of Art, the Azalea Garden is Philadelphia’s most recognized garden with over four acres of 150 different species of azaleas and rhododendrons intermingled with irises, tulip
s, sycamores, oaks and hundreds of blooming annuals and perennials.
While the garden’s most spectacular blooms happen in the Spring, the Azalea Garden is a year round attraction for anyone looking to enjoy a few hours of nature hidden amongst the hustle and bustle of an active and growing city.
Part of the allure of Philadelphia and its historic surroundings are the fountains and statues so characteristic of early Americana that can be found in abundance in Philadelphia.

Along the walk from the museum to the garden is a very dignified path of soldiers, each statue of which represents a soldier who helped carve the nation we know today by their contribution to the Am
erican Revolutionary War.
In the center of the parkway connecting the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Azalea Garden, there stands a magnificent collection of marble horses, known as The Fountain of Sea Horses which was donated to the City of Philadelphia in 1926.
While budget restraints do not always allow for the free flow of water in this invigorating fountain, it is still happily decorated with flowering vegetation even into the cool days of Fall.
